Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday in California City for charges related to the Aug. 22 shooting death of Danny Avalos, 19, of Ridgecrest, according to a news release from Ridgecrest Police Department.
RPD Sgt. Ryan Marrone on Wednesday said that information and tips from the public led officers to determine that the suspect, 24-year-old Ismael Octavio Quijano Jr. was in California City.
“We notified California City Police Department that we were heading that way because there was a chance our suspect is in their city and California City did inform us prior to our arrival that the vehicle we were looking for was in fact there,” he said.
With the assistance of California City Police Department, RPD conducted surveillance on a residence in California City where Quijano Jr. was alleged to be at.
While surveilling, Quijano Jr. was seen leaving the residence with 43-year-old Ahidee Barragan in a vehicle.
“Some our detectives and our officers rolled out to California City and after we arrived the suspect vehicle began driving,” Marrone said. “We did an enforcement stop on a residential street where the occupants were arrested.”
According to the RPD news release, both were taken into custody. Quijano Jr. was arrested for murder.
Barragan was arrested for being an accessor as she had knowledge he was the primary suspect in this case and appeared to be assisting him in evading capture.
Marrone declined to share specifics about the investigation but credited much of it with leads.
“We just went off leads and our detective and patrol officers did their due diligence in turning over every stone possible until we could determine who our suspect is and where he was,” Marrone said. “I really appreciate the public’s assistance with this because these kinds of cases cannot be solved without us working together.”
Marrone said the case will be filed with the Kern County District Attorney’s office. Quijano will be scheduled to appear in Kern County Superior Court in Bakersfield on Thursday at 3 p.m.
No bail has been set for Quijano.
Avalos, the victim, was shot in the 400 block of Robalo Street in Ridgecrest on Aug. 22. Officers quickly responded and found Avalos, who had suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. He was ultimately transported to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, where he died of his wounds shortly after 3 a.m.
The Kern County Coroner’s office on Tuesday ruled the death a homicide.
