BORON – The 37th Annual Boron Junior Senior High School Academic Awards and banquet was held inside the school multipurpose room on the evening of May 30. Parents, students, teachers and staff members came out for the annual event as well as a surprise dignitary. The dinner portion of the event started just after 6 p.m. and was provided by Espindola Family Grill. As attendees entered the line for dinner, they noticed some teachers and a few other staff members preparing and serving them the meal.

The multipurpose room was decorated in a Hollywood theme; complete with miniature “Oscars” on each table with the name of a student on the Oscar-also, the industrial arts class showed off their house projects which they made throughout the year.

Boron Junior Senior High School Principal David Wiggs served as master of ceremonies for the awards which started just after 7 p.m. Wiggs welcomed everyone to the event then called upon ASB President Bryson Job to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Wiggs then introduced the Muroc Joint Unified School District Board members in attendance and presented the first award of the night. The Toni Killberg Memorial Award is an award in memory of former Boron Junior Senior High School Principal Toni Killberg. Killberg passed away due to a lengthy illness after her retirement from the district. The award was presented to Boron High School Senior Haley Daughrity. The Golden Bobcat award went to seniors Marshal Fowlkes and Melanie Parker; the ASB award went to junior Bryson Job. The Cook/Robertson Spirit Award is a memorial award which was named after two Boron High School Cheerleaders; Connie Cook and Jeanie Robertson who were killed in a car accident along with coach Sal Bursey and his wife coming home from a basketball game played in Trona in 1964. The Cook/Robertson Spirit award was presented to senior Marshal Fowlkes by teacher Marjorie Stucki. Brandon Roque who is the field representative for California 36th District Assemblyman Tom Lackey presented Joanna Robles and Aaron Core with the Assemblyman Tom Lackey Rising Star Award. This award is for outstanding Dedication, Commitment and Achievement throughout the school.

The department and class awards were up next and are as follows: Mathlete Varsity – Kelton Chenworth: Mathlete Junior Varsity – Kayla Fort: Senior Male Athlete – Kade Garrett: Senior Female Athlete – Haley Daughrity: Principal’s Award – 7th Grade – Talon Richardson, 8th Grade – Sophia Mlinar, 9th Grade – Michael Garcia, 10th Grade – Savana Fowlkes and Aurora Olson, 11th Grade – Viktoriya Didenko and Edgar Lopez, 12th Grade – George Mlinar and Raquel Morales: Bobcat Spirit Award: 7th Grade – Morgan Fort, 8th Grade – Carolina Jauregui-Nunez, 9th Grade – Alana Matthews, 10th Grade – Amy Alwaw, 11th Grade – Abigail Castro and 12th Grade – Michael Arambula: Senior High Art – Jennifer Aguilar, Junior High Art – Zerin Martz, Senior High Industrial Art – Brandon Namkung, Senior High Computers – Raquel Morales, Junior High Computers – Kaili York, Senior High Spanish – Bryson Job, Senior. High English – Bryson Job, Junior High English – Kaili York, Senior High Science – Bryson Job, Junior High Science – Dylan Dadey, Senior High Social Studies – Bryson Job, Junior High Social Studies – Asher Hewes, Senior High Boys Athletics – Kelton Chenworth, Senior High Girls Athletics – Jordyn York, Senior High Physical Education – Michel Garcia, Junior High Physical Education – Kaili York, Senior High Office Aide – Garrett Knight, Senior High Mathematics – Bryson Job, Junior High Mathematics – Bradley Wiggs, Senior High Band – Thomas Ward, Senior High Band – Esteban Aguilar, Senior High Choir – Jeremy McKean, Junior High Choir – Naomi Overton and Senior High Yearbook – Kathleen Walker.

The final awards of the night were the presentation of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Boron High School Class of 2019. The Valedictorians are - Vanessa Perez, Jennifer Cano-Aguilar and Rose O’Dell and the Salutatorian is – Matthew Etheridge.
