BORON – A water truck caught fire during operations at the Rio-Tinto Borates Boron Operation open pit mine on the afternoon of June 6. The fire was reported shortly before 4 p.m. and was located about halfway down a dirt road inside the pit.

According to mine employees who witnessed the fire, a newer water truck was watering down the dirt and gravel on one of the many dirt roadways leading to and from the bottom of the open pit, when for unknown reasons the hydraulics caught fire. The truck was nearing the top of the pit when the incident occurred.

Mine personnel quickly got the fire under control and the driver of the water truck managed to escape without injuries. The water truck was deemed a total loss.

Rio-Tinto Borates started an investigation into the cause of the fire.
