BORON – You couldn’t have asked for better weather for the fifth annual Reggie’s Run for Kicks 5k Walk/Run, which took place on the morning of June 1. Several Boron residents and students came out for the annual event where sign ups took place at Bo’ Fitness Center which is located in downtown Boron. Boron Honorary Mayor Dale Slavinski, the 2019 Boron Community Queens and the 2019 Central Kern County Queens all came out to support the event. The walk/run got underway in front of the 20 Mule Team Museum around 9 a.m.

Reggie’s Kicks for Kids is a non-profit organization designed to honor the memory of Boron High School graduate Reggie Heard, who was shot and killed in 2014 after football practice at Los Angeles Southwest College where he was a student. The Boghosian family took Reggie under their wing so he could finish high school in Boron, during which time, Reggie found a soft spot in his heart for young kids and he often took the time to make each one feel special. Reggie loved sports and the shoes he played in so, the Boghosian family came up with a way to honor Reggie’s memory - enter Reggie’s Kicks for Kids. The program works to provide athletic shoes for boys and girls of all ages that share Reggie’s passion for sports. It also raises funds through Bo’s Fitness Center to provide athletic shoes for youth and also works with local sports teams and leagues to ensure kids have what they need to play their particular sport; with the funds raised through the Runs, grants and other donations of the last five years, Reggie’s Kicks for Kids has provided 206 pairs of shoes to deserving child and adolescent athletes. The program has helped 24 kids pay their fees to play Little League Baseball this year alone.

There’s a variety of ways to donate to the organization; local businesses and residents can sponsor the race, items can be donated as prizes for participants, nutritious snacks or drinks can be donated and monetary donations are always welcome and all donations are tax deductible.
